  • Hurricane Katrina: Preparations, Response and Rebuilding, is a seminar which was given at Northwestern University on Oct. 17. Faculty from several disciplines including engineering, history, political science and journalism explored the disaster from different angles.

  • Localization of Noise Sources in the Moveable Roof of Miller Park, Milwaukee, WI
    In 2002, operation of the sports stadium's moveable roof produced loud noises. It was discovered through Acoustic Emission (AE) testing that the pivot bearings were the most likely source of the noise, which was impossible to accurately locate by ear.
  • Sustainability: Engineering the City of the Future, October 1, 2003 lecture and presentation slides delivered by Professor Kimberly A. Gray, Northwestern University's Dept. of Civil & Environmental Engineering and Institute of Environmental Catalysis.

    Topics discussed include:
    • What we mean by "sustainability" and the principles of sustainable development.
    • Examples of problems and possible solutions that would make future cities much more sustainable (e.g., in energy, transportation, planning, manufacturing, etc.).
    • A future plan (2050) for the City of San Diego that won a national contest for Sustainable Development and was entered into a global competition. How this plan differs from the present day city and what it will take to achieve this plan.

  • Revive Wacker Drive: Wells Street Bridge / Wacker Project
    Watch the amazing replacement of the Chicago Department of Transportation's Wells Street / Wacker Drive 'L' transit bridge, that took place over one weekend in May, 2002 (streamed with permission from the Chicago Department of Transportation, ©2002)
