The Midwest
Bridge Working Group Winter
2002 meeting was held on Thursday December 5, 2002 at the
Hilton
Garden Inn at 1818 Maple Avenue in Evanston, IL. There
was also a field trip to the Chicago Skyway reconstruction
project on the morning of December 6.
The morning portion
of the Working Group meeting focused on forthcoming initiatives
of the Federal Highway Administration
impacting bridge maintenance and inspection. Mr. Ray McCormick
of the FHWA Office of Bridge Technology gave a presentation
on this subject. Mr. John Coleman of the Virginia DOT presented
on a state highway agency's perspectives on forthcoming
changes to the NBIS. Rick Smith of MIDOT moderated an open
discussion
following those presentations.
In the afternoon portion
of the meeting, Mr. Mike Hallien of the Indiana DOT gave
a presentation on short-span bridges,
and was followed by an overview on inspecting those bridges
by Mr. Mike Garlich of Collins Engineering. A speaker from
the Chicago DOT discussed the relocation of a section of
the elevated rail line on the Wacker Drive project that
the working group visited in December 2001. Ted Hopwood finished
the meeting with a presentation about a recent Kentucky
Transportation
Center technical exchange visit to Russia sponsored by
the FHWA and their inspection of bridges in the Russian state
of Perm.
