ASTM and Committee D18 on Soil and Rock: Possible Homes for TDR Standards

Vincent P. Drnevich1 and Robert Morgan2

The session will explore the various subcommittees in Committee D18 where various Time Domain Reflectometry Standards might be established. Within ASTM, Committee D18 on Soil and Rock is responsible for establishing and maintaining over 250 standards, published in the Annual Book of ASTM Standards, Volumes 4.08 and 4.09. ASTM Committee D18 was formed in 1937. The Committee, with current membership of approximately 1000, has jurisdiction of standards that play a preeminent role in all aspects of the geotechnical and geoenvironmental activities.

Organized in 1898, ASTM (the American Society for Testing and Materials) is one of the largest voluntary standards development organizations in the world.  ASTM is a not-for-profit organization that provides a forum for the development and publication of voluntary consensus standards for materials, products, systems and services. More than 32,000 members representing producers, users, ultimate consumers, and representatives of government and academia from over 100 countries develop documents that serve as a basis for manufacturing, procurement, and regulatory activities.
