Walnut Street Bridge Collapse--January 1996 (Harrisburg, PA)
"Here are some pictures of the Walnut St. bridge in Harrisburg, PA which had two spans wash away in our recent flood. The pictures were captured from an amateur video tape shown on the news.
"The bridge is fairly old (early 1900's?) and spans the Susquehanna River in Harrisburg and is now only used for pedestrian traffic. The Susquehanna is nearly a mile wide in Harrisburg and is normally around 5'-10' deep. The flood waters reached somewhere around 25'+/- with lots of ice.
"Apparently the bridge was 'lifted' off of its foundations due to the high waters and ice buildup. It literally floated down the river about 100 yards where it was dramatically swept under another reinforced concrete bridge."

"Just as an update, a third span collapsed into the river a few weeks ago, just before it was scheduled to be torn down. Further inspections of the bridge have found additional damage to several more piers. The bridge remains closed pending further investigations."
