The Infrastructure Crisis - A Special Report - 2/6/2008

Last month, ASCE Civil Engineering Magazine published a special report on the collapse of I-35W over the Mississippi River in Minnesota. The lengthy report discusses the nationwide infrastructure crisis, the various elements that have caused these ongoing problems, and some possible solutions. This report was created with commentary from some of the nations leading experts on infrastructure. Professor Richard J. Finno Receives Civil Engineer of the Year Award from ASCE Illinois Section - October 24, 2007

ITI Researcher Richard J. Finno received the Civil Engineer of the Year Award at the 91st Annual Dinner Meeting of the American Society of Civil Engineers at the Navy Pier Grand Ballroom on October 24, 2007.


Inaugural William O. Lipinski Symposium on Transportation Policy is online - October 18, 2007

The Inaugural William O. Lipinski Symposium on Transportation Policy was a forum to connect decision-makers with transportation experts from around the state and world, and build consensus on policies for state and federal action in 2007, 2009 and beyond. Former U.S. Rep. William O. Lipinski opened the forum named in his honor. U.S. Rep. James Oberstar, chairman of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, was an inspirational keynote speaker at lunch. The first panel of speakers highlighted the worsening conditions of our region's fragile infrastructure, instable funding mechanisms and governing structure. The second and third panels addressed innovative policy and technological tools and illustrated examples of successful practices from across the globe. The fourth panel of local leaders featured remarks on the days proceedings and an intimate question and answer session with conference participants on the current funding debate and the future of transportation in the six-county region. ITI at fmgm conference in boston, ma - september 21, 2007

The Geo-Institute of ASCE is holding the 7th International Symposium on Field Measurements in Geomechanics. The conference will be held in Boston, Massachusetts during September 24-27, 2007, and will showcase professionals, equipment, methods, and organizations associated with making field performance measurements to help manage risks in the design, construction and operation of engineered facilities. 6 papers were accepted to the conference from ITI researchers and staff, and Professors Charles Dowding and Richard Finno, and ITI Research Engineer David Kosnik will be presenting papers at the conference. Problem Bridge was fixed in 2005 - August 8, 2007

Former Cheif Research Engineer of the ITI Research Engineering Group David Prine was quoted in the Sacramento Bee's article "Problem bridge' was fixed in '05." The article discusses the fracture critical Bryte Bend Bridge in Sacramento, CA, which carries 80,000 vehicles a day, and has more than 700 stress cracks. This article comes in light of the recent Minneapolis bridge collapse over I-35W. Bryte Bend is also the former site of an ITI research project. View the article.

Professor Jan d. achenbach receives the national medal of science - may 29, 2007

Professor Jan D. Achenbach, Walter P. Murphy Professor and Distinguished McCormick School Professor of the Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering and Engineering Sciences and Applied Mathematics has been awarded the 2005 National Medal of Science. The awards were announced yesterday by President Bush. Achenbach and seven other researchers will receive the medal at a White House ceremony later this year. More >


DAN HOGAN NAMED Practitioner Advisor of the Year by Region 3 of the American Society of Civil Engineers - may 15, 2007

ITI is proud to announce that staff member Dan Hogan has been named Practitioner Advisor of the Year by Region 3 of the American Society of Civil Engineers. This award recognizes Dan's tireless work in helping Northwestern ASCE chapter members in shaping and implementing a vibrant chapter program, directly producing educational activities, and helping put together and teaching a computer-aided design and drafting course sequence.


panama canal lecture website now viewable

Professor Joseph Schofer was asked by the Northwestern University Alumni Association to give a series of lectures on the Panama Canal recently while on trip through the canal. ITI has created a Panama Canal website dedicated to these presentations to allow public access to them.


New high performance steel

New high performance NUCu Steel developed with funding from the Infrastructure Technology Institute is featured in the September 1st, 2006 article "IDOT Uses High-Performance Steel Developed at Northwestern". ITI Director David Schulz was quoted in the article as well. The official IDOT press release is available here ( PDF).
