The Infrastructure Technology Institute of Northwestern University is pleased to name David Kosnik as its 2000 Student of the Year.
A native of Northbrook, Illinois, David is a sophomore computer engineering student enrolled in Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science. David has worked for the Institute since shortly after matriculating at Northwestern in 1999. Among his accomplishments, he has developed innovative computer server software which autonomously publishes infrastructure data collected from the Institute's continuously remotely-monitored infrastructure projects on the World Wide Web. While his work to date has focused on remote crack monitoring near construction projects, he is now moving to expand this application to include Institute projects monitoring bridges and other infrastructure, as well as to include additional types of condition monitoring sensors. This will have the effect of allowing the monitoring of infrastructure projects remotely from any site having Internet access, greatly decreasing communications costs and problems, and greatly increasing the opportunity for productive sharing of information among technical professionals of various agencies, and even the general public.
David has also developed for the Institute applications for the Palm Computing platform which assist in the configuration of and provide diagnostic capabilities for remotely-monitored bridge sensor networks.
David is a bright and engaging young man who is very generous with his time and technical capabilities, which he applies to a variety of challenges including debugging the Institute Director's computer. The Institute looks forward to working with him during the remainder of his studies at Northwestern and beyond.
