Charles Dowding, Professor and coordinator
of Geotechnical Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental
Engineering, is developing and commercializing Autonomous Crack Measurement
(ACM) devices and systems. ACM systems autonomously record changes in
building cracks from construction and traffic vibrations for comparison
with changes produced by long term environmental effects such as temperature
and humidity. He is also completing commercialization of Time Domain
Reflectometry (TDR) devices. TDR is radar in a coaxial cable. Signals
are pulsed along a cable grouted into rock or soil. Locations and reflections
of these pulses describe movements within the earth such as sink holes,
between foundations and underlying rocks and soils such as bridge piers
and abutments, and of large complicated structures.
